Gavin Schmidt, Brady Leroux, Kyle McDonough named Source for Sports Players of the Month for February

The Alberta Elite Hockey League is pleased to announce Gavin Schmidt (Okotoks OilersU18 AAA),  Brady Leroux (Red Deer North StarsU16 AAA), and Kyle McDonough (Okotoks OilersU15 AAA) as the Source for Sports Players of the Month for February.

U18 AAAGavin Schmidt (Forward – Okotoks Oilers)

Okotoks Oilers forward Gavin Schmidt was a key part of the team’s run to the post-season, putting up seven goals and six assists in seven games in February, including an overtime-winner in a key game against Lethbridge, helping Okotoks secure the final playoff spot in a very tight South Division.

“(Gavin) has been a clutch performer down the stretch. His play in February has elevated the team to a 3-2 record pushing back to a race for the post season,” said Head Coach Chris Beston. “Off the ice, Gavin volunteers at minor hockey practices and shovels snow for that those who are unable.”

U16 AAABrady Leroux (Defence – Red Deer North Stars)

Red Deer North Stars forward Brady Leroux ended the 2021-22 AEHL regular season on a high note, notching seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in just seven games in February. He had three multi-goal games and five multi-point games during that stretch, highlighted by a four-point outing (2g, 2a) on February 26 against Lethbridge.

“Brady has worked extremely hard this month at practice where we focused on his defensive zone coverage and how to use his size to his advantage,” said Head Coach Lane Moore. “Our coaching staff challenged Brady to take his game to the next level, well his results have shown us the challenge was accepted.  Brady will be a key component to our success as we enter playoffs and proud of his current success.”

U15 AAAKyle McDonough (Forward – Okotoks Oilers)

Okotoks Oilers forward Kyle McDonough entered February on a three-game point streak, and extended it to 12 games, scoring 10 goals and adding 10 assists for 20 points in nine games in February. He finished the season with 36 goals, which led the league, and his 62 points put him behind only Kale Dach for the league lead.

“Kyle had an incredible month, scoring points in every game in February, finishing the season with the most goals in U15 AAA,” said Head Coach Jamie Steer. “Also the captain, he led the Oilers to 7-1-1 record in February.”
